Purple Fascinators for Weddings (Lilac, Lavender, Violet and Plum)

Purple runs from the softest lilac to the deepest plum, and each shade belongs to a different kind of wedding. Here is when to wear which, what to pair it with, and 14 pieces from our London atelier.

Purple fascinators for weddings divide by depth of colour. Lilac and lavender are spring and summer daytime colours: garden weddings, country churches, the mother of the bride. Rich purple and violet suit summer afternoons with real colour, and plum and midnight violet carry purple into autumn, winter and the evening. Purple sits well with navy, grey, champagne and yellow, and it never competes with the bride.

Lilac and lavender: spring and summer daytime

Lilac is soft enough for a morning ceremony and light enough for a garden or marquee. It is a favourite for the mother of the bride because it adds colour without competing with ivory. Wear it with dove grey, navy, a deeper lilac or a lavender print. A brim or saucer (Dusky Amethyst, Virel) gives presence; a headband (Petal Harmony, Lilac Whispers) keeps it light.

Purple, violet and plum: from summer colour to winter evening

Rich purple is a summer statement. It looks best with clear contrasts: navy, cream separates, yellow or emerald. Lexington and Tommie already carry yellow, Avery carries several colours, and Tanner and West bring in pink.

Plum and midnight violet belong to autumn, winter and the evening. Vesper is made for winter weddings; Seraphina's velvet and Ulma's deep plum hold their own against black, ink and dark tailoring, or against champagne and nude for a softer contrast.

What to wear with a purple fascinator

  • Tonal purple: a darker dress with a lighter fascinator, or the reverse. Keep the shades clearly apart.

  • Navy: works with every purple, day or evening.

  • Grey, champagne and nude: let the purple lead; best with lilac and plum.

  • Yellow or emerald: bold contrast for a summer wedding.

  • Black: for evening and winter, with violet or midnight pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Is purple a good colour for a wedding guest?

Yes. Purple never competes with the bride, and it comes in shades for every season: lilac for spring and summer, rich purple for summer afternoons, plum and violet for autumn, winter and evening.

What colour dress goes with a lilac fascinator?

Dove grey, navy, a deeper lilac, lavender or a soft print. Avoid a white or ivory dress at a wedding.

What colour dress goes with a purple fascinator?

Navy, cream separates, yellow, emerald, champagne or tonal purple. For evening, black works with deep violet and plum.

Is lilac suitable for the mother of the bride?

Yes. Lilac is soft, photographs well and stays clearly apart from the bride's ivory. A saucer such as Dusky Amethyst gives the extra presence the role often calls for.

Can I wear purple to a winter wedding?

Yes. Choose deep tones such as plum or midnight violet, and richer textures such as velvet. Vesper and Seraphina suit the colder months.
