What to Wear to the Qatar Goodwood Festival in 2026
From the Merve Bayindir atelier in London, a guide to dressing for Glorious Goodwood 2026, from the enclosure codes to five hand-made hats for the lawns above Chichester.
There is a reason the Qatar Goodwood Festival is known simply as Glorious Goodwood. Held high on the South Downs, it is the summer meeting where British flat racing loosens its collar and turns into something closer to a garden party with racing at its heart. In 2026 the Festival runs from Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August at Goodwood Racecourse near Chichester, West Sussex, five days of top-class sport, long lunches and a particular kind of relaxed summer dressing. A well-chosen hat sits at the centre of it. What follows is a guide to the meeting, written from the atelier, with five pieces we would happily wear ourselves.

The Goodwood dress code, in short
Goodwood is known for relaxed, understated dressing rather than strict rules, and that spirit runs back to King Edward VII, who swapped morning dress for a linen suit and a Panama and gave the meeting its holiday feel. There is no rule that a lady must wear a hat, yet headwear is very much part of the look, and never more so than on Ladies’ Day. The Richmond Enclosure is the smartest, where softly structured dresses, smart separates, tailored trousers with an artful top and sleek jumpsuits all sit well, and gentlemen wear a jacket, collared shirt, tie and full-length trousers. The Gordon Enclosure is a little more relaxed, with midi and maxi dresses and light blazers, while the Lennox Enclosure is the most easy-going of the three. As with the race headwear worn at Royal Ascot or the derby headwear seen at Epsom, a considered hat reads as good manners as much as good taste.
Ladies’ Day and the Goodwood mood
Ladies’ Day falls on Thursday 30 July 2026 and is the fashion high point of the week, shared with the Markel Magnolia Cup, the charity race ridden by amateur horsewomen. The Goodwood palette leans into summer: natural straw, chalky pastels, soft neutrals and the occasional clean note of colour, worn under real sun. Because the meeting sits on open downland in late July, shade matters as much as style, which is where a generous brim earns its place.
Goodwood is a garden party with racing at its heart, so the hat should feel like summer, not ceremony.

What to wear: five Merve Bayindir hats for Goodwood Festival
The five below are drawn from our summer line and finished by hand in London. Wide-brim straw does the heavy lifting for a day on the downs, with one sculpted occasion piece for anyone dressing for the Ladies’ Day front row. Prices include UK VAT.
Sereen · £375
A natural woven straw hat with a generous brim, wrapped in a taupe and rust silk band that falls into long printed scarf ties at the back. Soft, warm and quietly assured, it is the most Goodwood of the five, at home with sand and caramel linen and a little tan leather. Let the brim shade the face and the ties trail as you move.
Cielor · £325
For a clean note of colour, a royal blue straw boater with a wide brim, a pale grey silk band and long scarf ties carrying an illustrated print. It brings just enough of a lift against white cotton or soft beige. Keep the rest of the look pared back and let the blue lead.
Vianne · £325
A crisp white boater softened by a beige silk band that ties into a bow, with a printed scarf detail that rewards a second look. Fresh and gently playful, it sits beautifully with champagne and powder tones and a natural lip, an easy choice for a bright day on the lawn.
Noen · £375
The grand gesture of the group. A generous handwoven brim, a deep black satin band and an oversized bow at the back whose ribbons can be tied softly under the chin. It frames the face with real confidence and carries a simple summer dress on its own, a strong choice for anyone who wants to be seen from across the paddock.
Silken Grace · £1,100
For the front row on Ladies’ Day, a grey occasion hat with a sculpted, asymmetric wide brim and an oversized bow finished with fine silver detail, worn tilted to one side. It is the dressiest piece here and asks for very little around it: soft grey or dove tailoring, clean lines and a single point of jewellery.

Styling notes for the day
Let the hat anchor the outfit and keep the rest considered. Linen, cotton and soft tailoring in natural tones read perfectly at Goodwood, with pastels and a single clean colour in place of bold prints. The lawns are real grass and slope in places, so block heels, wedges or smart flats will serve you far better than a fine stiletto over a five-day meeting. Sunglasses, a small structured bag and quiet jewellery finish the look, and a light layer is worth carrying for when the downland breeze picks up in the late afternoon.
Ordering, and what to expect
Most of our pieces are made to order in the London atelier, part of a deliberate, low-waste way of working, so with the Festival at the end of July it is worth ordering with a little time in hand. If your plans are closer, our ready to ship pieces are dispatched within the next working day. Every order arrives in a custom box, with worldwide DHL Express shipping included, wherever you are travelling from.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dress code at the Qatar Goodwood Festival?
Yes, though it is guided by relaxed, understated dressing rather than strict rules. The Richmond Enclosure is the smartest, asking for softly structured dresses or smart separates for ladies and a jacket, collared shirt and tie for gentlemen. The Gordon and Lennox enclosures are progressively more relaxed.
Do you have to wear a hat at Goodwood?
No. Unlike Royal Ascot, there is no rule that ladies must wear a hat. That said, hats and Panamas are very much part of the Goodwood look, and most guests choose to wear one, particularly on Ladies’ Day.
When is the Qatar Goodwood Festival 2026?
The Festival runs from Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August 2026 at Goodwood Racecourse near Chichester, West Sussex.
When is Goodwood Ladies’ Day 2026?
Ladies’ Day falls on Thursday 30 July 2026, the same day as the Markel Magnolia Cup charity race, and is the fashion high point of the week.
Which colours work best?
Natural straw, soft neutrals and chalky pastels sit at the heart of the Goodwood palette, with the occasional clean note of colour. Summer linen and light tailoring suit the setting far better than heavy fabrics or bold prints.
