8 Small/Mini Fascinators You'll Reach for Again and Again
From the Merve Bayindir atelier in London: button, percher, mini saucer and pillbox, with eight hand-made small fascinators and the reasoning behind each.
A small fascinator is a headpiece built on a base roughly the size of a saucer or smaller: a button, a percher, a mini saucer or a pillbox, worn forward on the head or at an angle. Small fascinators are not the timid option. At a wedding where you will be embracing people all day, at a register office, in a city venue or on a petite frame, a small piece is simply the correct scale. The skill is in making a small piece look deliberate rather than apologetic, and that comes down to placement, angle and one strong detail.
Eight small fascinators from our atelier
Button, percher, double button, mini saucer and pillbox. Prices include UK VAT.
NICOLLETE FASCINATOR
£1,150
A black button-shaped fascinator on a smooth sateen base that sits neatly on the crown, held on a discreet headband. A spray of black crepe leaves rises from the back, set with three ornaments of coiled metallic wire and large faux pearls that lift the matte black with a quiet shine. Formal and restrained: the piece for funerals, memorials and winter occasions. Set it just off-centre so the leaves trail along the head.
GENEVA FASCINATOR
£1,000
An off-white button on a round, textured base of A-grade sinamay, with two buntal swirls for movement and a fine netted veil edged in tiny cultured pearls and mother-of-pearl embroidery. The veil is what makes a small piece read as finished rather than minimal. Bridal, wedding guest or christening, and it has a quietly mid-century spirit.
FERN FASCINATOR
£1,000
An off-white mini saucer on a classic round base of A-grade sinamay with a soft natural sheen. Two buntal swirls rise from the base, and cultured pearls with a mother-of-pearl ball sit at the centre. Geneva's unveiled sister: the same scale, a cleaner face, and the easier of the two to wear through a long reception.
FROSTED EUPHORIA FASCINATOR
£1,100
A grey button-shaped fascinator on a sinamay base covered entirely in an off-white 3D lace motif drawn like fine branches, with a soft grey crinoline cloud rising at one side and wired lace pieces arching upward. The atelier describes it as a lightweight, easy-to-wear silhouette, and it is the most delicate piece on this list. Winter weddings and pale palettes.
KERRY HAT
£1,100
A light pink percher that curves along the left side of the head, on a pink sinamay base covered in white floral lace, with a large white silk satin rose at the curve. A percher follows the shape of the head rather than standing off it, which makes it the natural choice for a mother of the bride who wants something smaller than a hat. Angle it to the left so it frames the face.
WEST FASCINATOR
£1,250
A purple percher on a rich purple sinamay base that curves to the left and frames the right side of the face, with cherry flowers in pink and purple across it and a pleated purple fan rising at the back. The fan gives height, which is how a small base holds its own at a formal summer event. Garden parties, summer weddings and race days.
AINSLEY FASCINATOR
£1,150
A warm coral double-button fascinator on a sleek A-grade sinamay base, trimmed with light coral silk flowers along its right-side edges. Two stacked buttons give a small piece a sculpted profile. Wear it on the right so the flowers sit as the focal point. A summer wedding and race-day piece that lifts cream, white and navy.
HEAVEN PILLBOX HAT
£550
A soft white wool felt pillbox beret with a small felt stem at the crown, its surface scattered with ivory appliqué rosettes, each finished by hand with a cultured pearl. Tonal and textural rather than loud. The winter small piece, for a register office, a christening or a cold-season wedding.

How small is small
Nobody in retail tends to give a number, so here is ours. The bases small pieces are built on, the button, the mini saucer and the small disc, generally fall between about 10 and 17 centimetres across. Trim can reach well beyond that: a feather, a fan or a veil may extend the silhouette considerably. When you are judging size, look at the base, not the decoration.
That distinction matters in one place in particular. In the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, a headpiece is acceptable only if it has a solid base of four inches, about ten centimetres, or more in diameter, and fascinators are not permitted at all. A small piece, however beautifully made, belongs in the Queen Anne or Village Enclosures, at a wedding, or anywhere else. Our Royal Enclosure guide covers the detail.
The small shapes, explained
Button
A round, flat-topped disc, usually worn forward on the crown or just off-centre. The most versatile small shape and the easiest to wear.
Percher
A shaped base that curves along one side of the head, following its line rather than standing off it. Worn angled, and it frames the face on the opposite side.
Mini saucer and double button
A shallow, slightly dished disc, or two buttons stacked for a sculpted profile. Worn tilted, so the curve shows. Our note on what a saucer hat is explains the full-size version.
Pillbox
A small crown with straight sides and a flat top, set on the back of the crown or tilted forward. The shape has a long history, which our pillbox essay traces.
Cocktail hat
Strictly, a small hat with a fully formed and visible base rather than a headpiece on a band, often finished with veiling and traditionally worn from late afternoon into the evening.
When small is the right answer
A day of embracing
A wedding involves a great deal of hugging and kissing, and a wide brim gets in the way of every one of them. A small piece worn to one side does not. We made the same point in our guide to navy fascinators for weddings, and it applies to every colour.
The venue
Scale follows the room. A cathedral or a large country church will carry a statement hat. A register office, a city hotel or a restaurant wedding usually calls for something smaller, and so does a winter wedding, where coats and indoor settings shrink the scale of everything.
Your frame
Proportion is the most reliable guide there is. On a petite frame, a large hat or hatinator can swamp the whole outfit, while a button or percher lets you be seen. The taller you are, the more scale you can carry. If your hair is short, our guide to fascinators for short hair goes further into fit.
The long day
A small piece weighs less, sits more securely and asks less of your hairstyle. From a morning ceremony to a late reception, that difference adds up.
Making a small piece look deliberate
The failure mode of a small fascinator is looking like an afterthought. Five things prevent it.
-
Wear it forward, not back. A small piece pushed to the back of the head disappears. Forward, on the crown or just above one brow, it reads.
-
Commit to an angle. A clear tilt looks chosen. A piece sitting flat and straight looks placed.
-
Let one element lead. A veil, a single fan, a cluster of pearls or a saturated colour. Small pieces carry one idea well and three badly.
-
Keep the hair clean. A smooth chignon, a sleek bob or smoothed waves give a small piece a frame to sit in.
-
Echo one colour. Pick up a single tone from your outfit, rather than matching everything.
A small fascinator carries one idea well and three badly. Choose the veil, the fan or the pearls, and let it lead.
How small pieces are made
Small does not mean quick. Every piece here is designed and hand-made in our London atelier, and the smaller the base, the more exacting the work, because every stitch is seen at close range. Sinamay, woven from abaca fibre, is blocked damp over small wooden forms and dried hard so a button or saucer holds its curve. Buntal, a much finer fibre, is soaked and bent into swirls by hand while it is still workable. Pearls are sewn on individually, and felt is steamed and pulled over the block for a pillbox crown. Merve Bayindir is a member of the British Fashion Council, with pieces selected for the Royal Ascot Style Guide. Every order arrives in a custom box, with worldwide DHL Express shipping included.
Frequently asked questions
Are small fascinators OK for a wedding?
Yes. At many weddings they are the better choice: they do not get in the way of embracing, they suit register offices and city venues, and they sit comfortably through a long day.
What counts as a small fascinator?
A headpiece on a button, percher, mini saucer, pillbox or small disc base, typically between about 10 and 17 centimetres across. Trim can extend further; the base defines the size.
Can I wear a small fascinator to Royal Ascot?
In the Queen Anne and Village Enclosures, yes. In the Royal Enclosure, fascinators are not permitted and a headpiece needs a solid base of at least four inches, about ten centimetres, in diameter.
What is a percher hat?
A small shaped base that curves along one side of the head, following its line rather than standing off it. It is worn angled and frames the opposite side of the face.
What size fascinator suits a petite woman?
A small piece: a button, percher or mini saucer. A large hat or hatinator can overwhelm a petite frame, while a small piece worn forward and angled lets the wearer be seen.
